Pollution incidents, Oil spill Mitigation & USCG Co-Ordination

Of paramount importance in a marine pollution situation is the initial response, evaluation and assessment of the extent of the oil spill. Second and equally important, and what follows is coordinating remedial actions locally between the ships master, the Coast Guard and others involved in the clean-up efforts. Third and also of paramount importance is keeping all parties involved, closely co-ordinated and informed.

We work closely with Ship Owners, their P&I clubs and attorneys, the ships crew, external oil spill clean-up crews, and government agencies to reduce exposure and limit owners’ liability in any oil pollution incident. We will put together a rapid response team, if so required, so that the mitigation efforts are co-ordinated on a round the clock basis.

Stowaway investigations, Seamen jumping ship & Missing persons

Columbus Marine surveyors and investigators are able to go on board, conduct crew interviews, take statements and perform in-depth investigations involving stowaway’s, seaman jumping ship, missing crewmembers or passengers, and third parties facilitating illegal activity. We also help protect vessel owners’ interests coordinating speedy repatriation of such persons through embassies of the countries involved, using local law enforcement to assist.

Stevedore Injury & Pilferage investigations:

We provide on-board seminars as well as work with vessels’ masters and crews , advising them in advance of how to avoid potential situations involving stevedore injury. Additionally we also counsel crew how to handle stevedore pilferage in ports where this is rampant, and work closely with them when cargo is valuable to prevent any cargo shortages.

Slip & Falls, Person Overboard, and other ship board injuries:

At Columbus Marine we are able to investigate the root cause of injuries on board all kinds of vessels.
Whether a passenger slip on a stairway, or near a swimming pool, or at a watertight door threshold, we are usually able to establish cause of the incident as well as provide advice as to how to avoid similar incidents and future liability. Likewise, we are also able to investigate accidents on fishing vessels where crewmembers, supernumeraries or passengers have fallen overboard.

Contraband on Board, Drug Arrests and Illegal Activity:

We work closely with attorneys and local law enforcement, to protect interests of the ship owner, P&I Club, as well as the offending individuals concerned in an effort to mitigate damages and delays to the vessel. We also have the ability to conduct on-board seminars to educate vessels crews on drug prevention efforts and illegal activity.
